Why do little trees sometimes grow out of dead trees?

Nursery Log

We went out to visit our tree today and to answer one of our inquiry questions about the forest.

Owen had asked – Why do little trees sometimes grow out of dead trees?

We found out that these special trees are called nursery logs because they have a lot of baby plants growing on them.  This is what the kids discovered about nursery logs.

  • Cherish – The plants need water that they can get from the log.  Moss, plants, and little trees grow on them.
  • Kaydan – The logs are good because they get seeds on them that grow baby trees and plants.
  • Isaac – The logs have food for plants and lots of other good stuff. It’s really, really brown and mushy.
  • Ava – The logs have seeds that grow on the log.  And the seeds get lots of water from the tree
  • Owen – The log has a lot of water and stuff to help plants grow.  It has like sunlight and food for the plants.

Finding Shapes Outside

Dear K/1’s:

What shapes do you think we might find outside on the playground and in the forest?

  • Sierra – A triangle could be a rock, and a circle could be a basketball net.
  • Isaac – A diamond could be a crystal, and a triangle could be a rock.
  • Hilary – A triangle could be a leaf, and a diamond could be a leaf too.
  • Kaydan – A diamond could be a crystal, and a triangle could be a diamond.
  • Cherish – A rectangle could be a blanket, and a triangle could be a sign.
  • Mya – A square could be a box, and rectangle could be the shape of the basketball court.

Here are a few shapes that we found.
